Guinea Dog is
a tale about Rufus, a little boy who wants, more than anything, a dog. His dad,
however, is dead set against it and what he says goes. One day, Rufus’ mom
comes home with a guinea pig. They name the guinea pig “Fido” – bit the thing
about Fido, is that she thinks she’s a dog… She barks, bites, drools, pants,
fetches, and plays dead. Rufus isn’t too pleased with his “plump guinea sow”,
but he comes to love her odd personality while dealing with some best friend
issues at school. Rufus begins to see the advantages of having such a unique
pet.
Guinea Dog is
guaranteed to entertain. Jennings’ dialogue is fantastic. He effectively
portrays Rufus as a smart aleck, sarcastic kind of kid, but he does this
without explicitly describing Rufus as sarcastic. Jennings does a wonderful job
of showing and not telling; the dialogue certainly speaks for itself. Jennings’
characters are a lot of fun and the story is just plain enjoyable. The
side-splitting dialogue and unique take on the experience of owning and caring
for a pet is sure to be a hit with tweens and more.
